Male suicide rates are two-thirds higher than that of women in the city of Ballarat. The Men’s Health and Wellbeing project is important to the Ballarat Suicide Prevention Place-Based Trial.
The leadership group prioritized men as a target group for the Ballarat trial. A working group was established to scope meaningful activities to reduce male suicides in Ballarat. The working group was comprised of community members to scope the development of the activities.
This activity aims to establish better insight into the current level of understanding about important factors that relate to mental health and suicide including lifestyle factors and stigma.
Outside the Locker Room (OTLR) have been contracted for this project to deliver their program to 30 clubs, groups and/or employers in Ballarat. Their program includes a mental health education session and 12 months of welfare support to participants that complete their program.
OTLR supports sporting clubs, community groups and employers by providing education and welfare support on mental health and other social topics.
Positive mental health and group culture is a feature of success. This project aims to help community groups identify signs of vulnerability or risks within the group and provide contemporary information to help support the mental health and wellbeing of members each group. OTLR offer:
1 x mental health education session to build the confidence and capacity of group members to help improve local understanding about the impact of declining mental health and the risk of suicide. OTLR have developed a software application that includes relevant questionnaires and helpful resources for people that participate. The information collected in the questionnaire helps target local needs towards relevant information to better support men at risk of suicide in the community. (for more information on the collection of data, please read the information listed in the project updates and information tab below)
Direct support for participants through the OTLR welfare support program for 12 month’s.
To express your interest in participating in this program, please complete the form via the following link and you will be contacted by OTLR when possible: –
