Suicide First Aid Training for the Great South Coast

Sometimes friends, family, colleagues, even a professional connection can be the first to see that there is something wrong. Knowing how to recognise and respond if someone is having thoughts of suicide is difficult. But the chances you may have to do this one day are high. Having the right skills could help keep someone safe and connect them to care.

The Great South Coast Place Based Suicide Prevention Trial is bringing the LivingWorks and crisis hero partnership to the Great South Coast and offering the online Start course.

Living works START program is a 60-90 minute online suicide first aid course. It will give you the skills to recognise when someone is at risk, identify red flags, help you know how to speak to someone about suicide, and then support them to seek the professional help they may need. Online community platform Crisis Heroes is working with leading suicide first aid organisation, LivingWorks, on a pilot project for Victorians to help each other stay safe

This project aims to give the community the confidence and ability to identify and support someone who may be at risk of suicide by providing free access to 750 community members from Warrnambool, Glenelg, Corangamite, Southern Grampians and Moyne shires to complete the Start program and then link to the Crisis Hero’s platform to support the wellbeing of other community members.

We have worked very hard to identify key community ’Gatekeepers’ and offer training to make the most positive impact we can for the region. Gatekeepers are those people in the community that are not specifically trained or provide a support service, may not work for a community support organisation or treatment service but have regular and close contact with other community members, friends, families and carers. Other Gatekeepers might be those who are key contacts in sports clubs, (such as captains and coaches), hairdressers, community groups and clubs, or in a profession that may involve interaction with people who are experiencing a personal crisis, like financial services, even real estate and employment services.

We are encouraging those who identify as Gatekeepers to take part in the training, and we encourage all community members to be a Crisis Hero. Go to ‘important links’ to navigate to the Crisis Heroes and LivingWorks websites for more information.
